Spruce Street Bridge

Paterson, NJ

About This Project

After being selected to rehabilitate the historic Spruce Street Bridge in Paterson, New Jersey, we completed a full superstructure replacement for the structure while preserving its historical significance. The project involved removing the bridge decking in stages, ensuring continuous access, and minimizing environmental impact over the Passaic River.

Due to its historical importance, we worked closely with the local historical society to recreate the bridge’s original architectural details that date back to the structure’s construction in 1932, including key elements like the bridge’s parapet. Although the original structure could not be preserved, a new parapet was designed to replicate the 1932 design using exposed aggregate concrete. Its rough texture and small window openings mirrored the bridge’s original appearance, blending historical accuracy with modern engineering.

By balancing structural upgrades with historical preservation, the Grade team delivered a safer, structurally sound bridge that honors its past while securing its future functionality and durability.
